This issue was featured in the latest issue of Planet S In February Calgary’s city council voted to discontinue fluoridation of city water Similar groups are in Moose Jaw as well.

Backed by “more than half a century of scientific research” the benefits of fluoridation are that “fluoridation reduces the incidence of cavities.”  American Dental Association website. Skeptic North website.

Are the “risks” being touted by anti-fluoridation concerned citizens backed by scientific evidence?

What are the implications should the anti-fluoridation movement be brought to Saskatoon City council and what action are we prepared to take?

Any issues people wish to bring up.

Freethinkers in the Pub
is happening tomorrow
When: Where:
Wednesday, June 22, 2011
7:00 PM
O’Shea’s Irish Pub
222 2nd Ave S
Saskatoon, SK

For this one, we are going to try for a outdoor patio, weather permitting. I would like to try for O’Shea’s downtown, though they do not take reservations. I will plan on getting there early and tying down a table or two myself.

If the weather goes against us, it might be necessary to relocate to Lydia’s on the spur of the moment (O’Shea’s has limited indoor space). Stay tuned for any sudden change of plan!

SSFN: Reading Group: Unconditional Parenting

Posted in Event, Saskatoon on June 17, 2011 by saskskeptic
The next Saskatoon Secular Family Network reading group is:

  • Sunday, June 19, 2011 at 7:00 PM at the Broadway Roastery, 2318 8th St E Saskatoon, SK
How to find us: we’ll be in the glassed-in side room

Moving on with our discussion of Unconditional Parenting: Moving from Rewards and Punishments to Love and Reason by Alfie Kohn.  May’s reading group discussion of Chapter 6 (“What Holds Us Back?”) gave us so much to talk about that we didn’t get to Chapter 7. So for June’s reading group, we’ll cover Chapter 7 (“Principles of Unconditional Parenting”) and Chapter 8 (“Love Without Strings Attached”).

Hope to see you there!  Feel free to come out and discuss Alfie (we are all on a first-name basis now), even if you haven’t had a chance to read the chapters.

CFI Saskatoon Meetup: Confessions of a Christian Feminist:Women & the Church in the Post-Enlightenment

Posted in news, Saskatoon on June 17, 2011 by saskskeptic

The next Saskatoon Freethinkers meetup is:

When: Where:
Sunday, June 19, 2011
11:30 AM
Venice House
906 Central Avenue
Saskatoon, SK S7N 2G8

Women’s roles in organized religion have always evoked lively debate. As a feminist scholar within Christianity, Sandra Beardsall will note the diverse reactions to “Enlightenment,” which positioned women in diverse and conflicting ways in church life and leadership, and suggest avenues for conversation for secularists and religionists in post-modernity.

Sandra is the first religious speaker we have invited to one of our meetings. Hopefully members will appreciate this opportunity to speak with someone of faith.

Here are links to a few things written by Sandra or quoting her:

Article in Canadian Women Studies “I Love to Tell the Story”

National Post Article “United they fall”

Sandra Beardsall is Professor of Church History and Ecumenics at St. Andrew’s College, Saskatoon. Originally from Ontario, she served as an ordained minister in the United Church of Canada with congregations in Labrador and eastern Ontario , before moving to Saskatoon to teach. She participates in research and writing related to Christian history and to interchurch/interfaith dialogue.

Café Apostate will happen on Sunday, June 12, 2011
When: Where:
Sunday, June 12, 2011
6:00 PM
The deck of
203 Rutherford Crescent
Saskatoon, SK

Because in Saskatchewan we don’t get a lot of nice weather (think summer, sun and heat!) we’re changing the June, July and August meet-up locations to the deck of 203 Rutherford Crescent, which is about two blocks from our usual meeting place – Mackenzie Cole Coffeehouse in Sutherland.

Bring some beer or other cold beverage to drink on the deck. We’ll provide the coffee and/or tea service!
