Saskatoon Freethinkers: Love, Atheist Style
Announcing a new Meetup for Saskatoon Freethinkers!
What: Love, Atheist Style
When: Sunday, February 21, 2010 3:30 PM
906 Central Avenue
Saskatoon, SK S7N 2G8
Love is patient, love is kind … wait a minute — if you don’t believe in a God/s, how can you explain love?
In honor of February 14th (a day also known as Valentine’s Day), we’ll explore what it means to love when you’re without a deity or belief in the supernatural. We’ll talk about some of the biology and neuroscience behind these romantic impulses of ours, and will then discuss whether or not we’re less capable of appreciating this affection since we can’t give it an other-worldly transcendence.
We’ll also revisit the issue of the role of rituals and traditions in a secular life.
Here are a few things to read/listen/watch in anticipation:
- Crazy Love by Steven Pinker and a 60-second podcast summarizing the article
- A Humanist Wedding Ceremony
- Why Love Matters: How Affection Shapes a Baby’s Brain by Sue Gerhardt
- and a video — What is Love?: The Atheist Experience
