CFI Regina: Religulous

Posted in Event, Regina with tags , , , on March 25, 2011 by saskskeptic

CFI Regina is hosting a public screening of Religulous Saturday, April 16 · 2:00pm - 6:00pm at the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology, 265 Albert Street, Regina, SK.

From IMDB.com

Bill Maher interviews some of religion’s oddest adherents. Muslims, Jews and Christians of many kinds pass before his jaundiced eye. Maher goes to a Creationist Museum in Kentucky, which shows that dinosaurs and people lived at the same time 5000 years ago. He talks to truckers at a Truckers’ Chapel. (Sign outside: “Jesus love you.”) He goes to a theme park called Holy Land in Florida. He speaks to a rabbi in league with Holocaust deniers. He talks to a Muslim musician who preaches hatred of Jews. Maher finds the unlikeliest of believers and, in a certain Vatican priest, he even finds an unlikely skeptic.

From Wikipedia:

Religulous is a 2008 American comic documentary film written by and starring comedian Bill Maher and directed by Larry Charles. According to Maher, the title of the film is a portmanteau derived from the words “religion” and “ridiculous”; the documentary examines and mocks organized religion and religious belief.

32nd Annual Nash Memorial Seminar

Presented by Dr. John McCarthy, SJ

Nature is all there is and science is the only way to know nature. This “scientific naturalism” seems ready and willing to privatize public religious discourse. God is a “delusion”. Religion poisons everything, is irrational and exclusionary. In a word, religion is misanthropic. For some believers and nonbelievers alike, Darwinism is inherently atheistic. For others, God is either a delusion or an intelligent designer. The hegemony of scientific and technical discourse seems to have reduced our ability to communicate deeply held human values. The religious response seems unable to fully embrace the integrity of nature. Caricatures of science and religion abound. Wonder and mystery, humility and wisdom lie as casualties. How have you experienced the discourse between science and religion? How may we reconstruct a discourse that acknowledges our human desire for meaning and goodness?

John McCarthy, SJ, PhD, is the university chaplain at St. Mark’s College at the University of British Columbia, where he also lectures in ecological theology. In the summer months, Dr. McCarthy conducts research in biodiversity for the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Environment and Conservation. He received a BScFor. (forest tree biology) from the University of New Brunswick, a MS (soil science) from the University of Florida, and a PhD (boreal forest ecology) from the University of British Columbia.

Northern Lights This Weekend

Posted in Event, news, Regina, Saskatoon, science with tags on February 5, 2011 by saskskeptic

SpaceWeather.com is forecasting possible northern lights starting Feb. 4.  Now if the weather will just cooperate.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A solar wind stream hit Earth during the late hours of Feb. 4th, sparking a G2-class (Kp=6) geomagnetic storm.  Sky watchers in Scandinavia, Russia, Canada, Alaska and perhaps even northern-tier US states such as Maine, Minnesota and Wisconsin, should be alert for auroras on Friday night.  The best time to look is during the hours around local midnight.

Canada also has a space weather site

Debate-able: Reflections on Recent Debates

Posted in Media, news, Regina, Saskatoon with tags , , , , , , on February 5, 2011 by saskskeptic

The following is a guest post from George Williamson discussing his recent debates with Michael Horner and William Lane Craig (video here).

In the last week of January 2011, I debated two Christian apologists on separate occasions, one in Regina and one in Saskatoon.  Both debates took place on the respective university campuses, and both were (at least in part) organized by the Campus for Christ groups on those campuses.  Both occasions were well co-ordinated and organized.

In Regina, I met Michael Horner for debate, and in Saskatoon, William Lane Craig.  Their arguments are substantially the same, and well-known, so I won’t spend too much time on the details, except where necessary.  Horner used only three arguments (Objective Morality Argument, Kalam Cosmological Argument and Fine-tuning Argument) but to these, Craig added three more (Argument from Contingency [basically, a Cosmological Argument], Personal Experience Argument and the Resurrection of Jesus Argument). These can be easily found on the internet.

There is a new Regina Psychic Society message board.

Its weird, I was thinking about cold reading this morning; and how the best mentalist can far exceed the best performance of psychics.  Man I must be . . .

You may wish to download the “Skeptic’s Bingo” ipod app (touch, phone, ipad) to make the debate more entertaining, but I think this app is more directed to creationist speakers, which is not expected at these debates.

William Lane Craig also wants to meet with freethinkers on campus on Fri, Jan 28 at 10 am. Let me know if you’re interested in more information about this.

We plan to head over to the Hose & Hydrant (#612 11th Street E., Saskatoon) after the Saskatoon debate for anyone who wishes to join us.
