Announcing the “Common Science” Podcast

Posted in Feed Your Brain, Media, news, science with tags , , , , on February 11, 2011 by saskskeptic

Some friends and I are experimenting with a science based podcast.  We want to focus on science stories with a western Canadian influence.  We are also interested in understandable explanations of the science and technology that we experience in everyday life.

Episode 1 is up and a draft edit of Episode 2.  Consider this a sneak peek before we start pushing it to iTunes and widely promoting it.

Have a listen and please give us feedback-both positive and negative.

Debate-able: Reflections on Recent Debates

Posted in Media, news, Regina, Saskatoon with tags , , , , , , on February 5, 2011 by saskskeptic

The following is a guest post from George Williamson discussing his recent debates with Michael Horner and William Lane Craig (video here).

In the last week of January 2011, I debated two Christian apologists on separate occasions, one in Regina and one in Saskatoon.  Both debates took place on the respective university campuses, and both were (at least in part) organized by the Campus for Christ groups on those campuses.  Both occasions were well co-ordinated and organized.

In Regina, I met Michael Horner for debate, and in Saskatoon, William Lane Craig.  Their arguments are substantially the same, and well-known, so I won’t spend too much time on the details, except where necessary.  Horner used only three arguments (Objective Morality Argument, Kalam Cosmological Argument and Fine-tuning Argument) but to these, Craig added three more (Argument from Contingency [basically, a Cosmological Argument], Personal Experience Argument and the Resurrection of Jesus Argument). These can be easily found on the internet.

Does God Exist Debate Sheaf Article

Posted in Media, news, Saskatoon with tags , , , on February 2, 2011 by saskskeptic

The Sheaf has this article about last weeks William Lane Craig vs George Williamson “Does God Exist” debate.

Over 300 people crowded into the Neatby-Timlin Theatre on Jan. 26, filling every seat and step in the aisle to see two professors argue for and against the existence of God.

William Lane Craig, a research professor of philosophy at Talbot School of Theology, provided the theist argument, while the University of Saskatchewan’s George Williamson argued the atheist position. The event was organized by Campus for Christ, with help from the Debate Society, the Saskatoon Freethinkers, the Philosophy Club and Athletes in Action.

Craig was first at the podium. He used a Power Point presentation with well-constructed points and was incredibly easy to follow. With confidence and skill, Craig listed his six arguments with a seamless style that surely any atheist could respect. Craig’s argument was for Christianity and not theism in general, in response to which Williamson emphasized that theism, not Christianity, should have been the focus.
